The right variety plays a big part in the eventual yield that you get from your hard work; but, also, the type of planting stock that you have makes a big difference.

The Two Main Ways to Grow Turmeric

  • Root Rhizomes
  • Mothers (Crown Rhizomes)
Turmeric

Tuber Rhizomes are similar to the tumeric that you buy in the store.  And we've done that. Three problems:

  • 1. You don't know what variety they are and if they are suited to your climate (most aren't), as most are grown in India.
  • 2. You can't be sure what diseases they might have.
  • 3. If not organic, they might be sprayed with a sprout retardant.

Mothers are the Crown Rhizomes of the Tumeric plant. When you dig them, they are the middle section of the plant, and thus have lots of energy and sprout much quicker the next year. If you have the money, they are worth the investment. They are easier and more certain for establishment. Pictured is a mother, ready to go into cold storage for the winter. When they come out, they are typically much darker. Shown is a Grade A Mother plant.

Turmeric Mother Crown Rhizome

We will have very limited amounts of turmeric available this year, mostly mothers, but are also working on sourcing tubers as well.
